William Smart founded Smart Design Studio in 1997. William has built an architectural firm inspired by pure Modernism and believes that form does not follow function, but rather ‘form has a function’. William applies layers of significance to each project, embedding hidden meaning and building up surface texture to create poetry within the finished design.

The practice has a philosophy of excellence, innovation, and collaboration, and believes that architecture has a duty to contribute positively to the public domain. It has a responsibility to respect the environment in which it sits, both in an immediate visual sense and with regard to sustainability, in its broadest, most nuanced understanding. This is accomplished through employing the latest technology, coupled with the art of light, the outlook, interior well-being, and the craft of building.

Smart Design Studio’s approach is to work from the macro to the micro, from the entirety of the overall structure, right down to the hinges on doors, millimetre-precise joinery, and the colours on the walls.

Smart Design Studio has been recognised by multiple awards for excellence on projects ranging from single dwellings to multi-unit residential apartments, to interior design, innovation, and sustainability. William was also recognised by his peers as The Luminary winner of the Inde Awards in 2017.
